RESEARCH

Main Research Topics: Currently, Hou Sheng-Tsung's main research topics are as follows: (1) Technology Sense-Making and Adoption, (2) Communities of Practise and Behaviour within Organisations, (3) Technology-driven Service Innovations.

(1) Technology Sense-making and Adoption: Technology users' behaviour towards the technology within organisations and their willingness to diffuse the technology to others, depending on their subjective views on the technology and the sense they ascribe to it. Conducting cross-country research of the taxi industry over a period of ten years (2003-present), Hou Sheng-Tsung has interviewed over 500 taxi drivers working for Singapore's Comfort Taxi or Taiwan Taxi, while at the same time collecting questionnaires filled out by over 900 taxi drivers and almost analysing the almost 100 GB database produced by the GPS dispatch systems. This research platform on the taxi industry using both qualitative and quantitative research methods has enabled him to advance a number of research findings on how Technology Sense-making influences Technology Adoption and Technology Diffusion.

(2) Communities of Practise and Behaviour within Organisations: During the process of ten years of field research in the taxi industry, Hou Sheng-Tsung has also had a chance to analyse from the point of view of the drivers' technology user community and the organisation level, how cabbies are influenced by their superiors (staff), colleagues (partners) and lead users (trendsetters) on a person-to-person and within the community of their industry. For the purposes of this analysis, he has combined several concepts from organisational behaviour theory (for instance: Psychological Ownership, Sense of Belonging, Self-Efficacy or Positive Psychology) and used as a theoretical basis to analyse technology usage behaviour on the micro-level, advancing an appropriate theoretical combination of Management of Technology and research of Organisational Behaviour.

(3) Technology-driven Service Innovations: One of the aims of introducing a technology into an organisation is to induce organisation or process innovation, thereby increasing the organisation's competitiveness on the marketplace. This kind of innovation through technology and the clearly visible service innovations in the Taiwanese taxi industry have also become one of Hou Sheng-Tsung's research topics. In particular, he focuses on the interaction between interlinked service innovations. This is because there is a serious problem of information asymmetry between supply and demand in the taxi industry, which has led to a share of empty taxis of over 80%.
